Hello again to the few people who follow me. With my seasonal era at target over with, it’s time to find another job. There is a sign shop down here in Exton that I need to check out. But if that doesn’t work, my mom is helping me set up my own design firm.

So I may be asking a few of my PCAD friends to work with me if/when I get some clients. And who knows, this might just be amazing.

So, it’s been awhile. Been scrapping by for the moment. Lucky that my parents aren’t kicking me out of my little apartment on their property. I got a job at Target, but it’s most likely going to end in January.

Had another freelancing opportunity and I’m just waiting for shirts and stuff to be printed before I post it. And I have another job that just appeared in my inbox but I’ve been either busy with work, inconvenienced or just too exhausted to give a crap.

Still no luck in getting an in house job. I keep wondering if I made the right choice. I browse Monster, Craigslist, SnagAJob and any other job hunting website I can find.

Oh well, I’ll just have to build up my job history with retail, freelance and house-sitting until I can find and graphic design job.

Here’s hoping I can find an internship in the summer.

Recently had a bit of work. A friend needed a business card for his landscaping work. He’s still in high school but he enjoys doing yard work for others.

Took me roughly an hour to mock up a few roughs for him and he settled on this one. However, he did ask that I put a little stick figure man mowing a lawn on it. I think it works and it’s funny.

Made $20.

Summer

Well, it’s been a few weeks since graduation. The break from school is nice, but i have to start looking for a job sooner or later. I’ve set up my Monster page, updated LinkedIn, still trying to make Behance work right and i have a few pieces to upload to PCA&Ds network for success.

Aside from that, it’s been pretty nice.

If anyone reading this has any leads, people looking for entry level graphic designers, send them my way. Almost anything at this point would be nice.

I would like to stay local for now, get some work experience before I set my sights further.

Well, the senior show is about to begin. 3-4 months if working on this boils down to a 3 hour show. Granted it’s still up for a week, but we only have to be here today. I’m still in disbelief that it’s over.

Just had three reviews at PCA&D and it brought up a thought that has been recurring in my mind every now and then. Did I make the right choice? I enjoy design work, but every time I speak to a professionals I feel that I don’t have the passion or the pop culture knowledge to be a designer. The one fear that I have about all this, not that I’ve made the wrong choice, but that I’ve gone and wasted my parents money on something I’m never going to use.

About less than 2 weeks. This is getting frightening. Projects are due; papers are due, final tests and presentations. And then after I graduate, I have to get a job. HUZZAH GROWING UP!

Hopefully I can find the right job were I don’t feel overworked, were there’s that nice balance of work and play.

Had my mock interview/portfolio review yesterday, went well, lets just hope I get a good grade for it. This weekend is also the AIGA portfolio review, so we’ll see how that goes.

Edit: Just got comments back from the reviewer. I knew i was lacking in “Passion” but it hurts sometimes to hear it from others.

I dunno, maybe it had something to do with the fact that I knew he was an experienced veteran in the design world. It’s easier for me to back up my ideas to classmates and friends, but against someone who has been doing this for their entire life, I feel that they do indeed know better than I do so i just take the critiques as they are.

The school year winds down to the fiery finale *hides the jet fuel* and we are all slowly becoming more bitter as the semester goes on. Tests and projects and papers all seemingly due the same week or day and spending insane amounts of cash that we as art students just do not have.

It’s no wonder why we procrastinate, we put off project A to get project B done because Project A is due next week while Project B is due 5 minutes ago. everything gets done, but there are just so many of them and almost not enough time.

I’ll work on things this Sunday, oh wait! School field trip to see a movie. how about Wednesday next week during my 5 hours break? Mock interview with Go Welsh. How about this Thursday before history class? Getting glass cut at Lowes for Fridays class.

the days i do have off, i don’t do a thing because i need time to wind down and relax. I play my games that i have touched in weeks or, you know, sleep.

If work is like this, then I’m going to lose my marble quickly.

Self Promotion Inspiration:

So, I have to come up with a self promotion piece for my professional practices class. I have a pirate like thing going on, but the more i think about it, the more I think it shouldn’t have a theme unless the theme is me.

I found this while browsing the net and this piece is awesome. I think I should stay with the pirate theme just to show that I can use a given theme and make something that works. So i’m going to base my idea close to this piece i found while not making an exact copy.

So far my idea is:

You’d get this smallish chest in the mail. It’d be stained dark with some pattern etched into the wood. When you open it up and you’d see a flat image of some vectored coins. the image would run flush with the top of the chest and there would be a small tab so you can pull it out. Under all that you’d find a tiny booklet with my work and probably a thank you at the end, my business card, maybe some chocolate coins (if i can, get them stamped with my logo with custom blue foil) and a post card with a treasure map design on one side and the reverse is the postcard with mailing info, stamp and a space for them to write something if they are interested.

I’m still trying to figure out what else i could put in the box without it being over cluttered. i’d like to incorporate a key into it somewhere.

It’s been about a week since designathon so I guess I should make a blog post about it or something.

It was really fun to do. We got to work with real clients in a real world environment, create some amazing pieces for our portfolios and give back to the city.

The client our group had (S:Me, Joe, Triscia T:Ted, Maria) was Assets of Lancaster,

“A nonprofit organization that helps lower income small business owners start and grow their businesses. We did a logo redesign, brand identity update, a new web site design and a brochure.” ~Ted (http://blog.redfeather-art.com/)

I uploaded some pictures he took of the brochure I helped redesign. you can compare the new design to their existing material.

We had a good laugh during designathon, it’s really odd how type (yes, fonts) jokes are funny to us. You mention “Papyrus” or “Comic Sans” and we groan or laugh.

All in all, I’m really glad I decided to do Designathon. It was something worthwhile and fun and I suggest that every PCA&D designer participates in it as many times as you can. This was my first and last Designathon as I am graduating this April.

Brand Promise

So, sitting here in design studio and just had my critique. It wasn’t a bad critique, but it wasn’t necessarily good either.

The thing that got me thinking is when Bob started talking about the brand promise and it hit me.

What does Helix Electronics promise?

Helix electronics promises that you can hear everything. That the quality of our speakers is so high that you can notice every instrument playing. In your movies, you will feel that you are there.

Not quite sure how i’m going to do this poster unless I’m showing the product.

So My logos went over well with our professor. He said that I was better along than some of the others in my class. I guess that’s what I get for have logo concepts on the first day of class.

Right now it is very much ice outside. Everything is coated in a thick layer of the stuff, still, and it makes it hard to leave my room and go to school. Almost makes me wish I lived back in sunny, warm California.

Least I got up early today and did some strenuous work hiking through thick ice and snow o repair a fence with mom. I’m going to sleep soundly tonight.

So here are some designs I’m working on for my Senior Thesis at PCA&D.

The company (Fake) that I have been given is called “Helix Electronics”

Product/Service: Consumerelectronics, home theater and audio

Special Features: Products are known for super sleek, high-end design along with superior performance. Very expensive.

Company size/distribution: Home office in Tokyo, Japan. Products distributed in US, Canada and Europe through salon-style AV dealers

Target Audience: Music and movie lovers of all ages, but primary buyers are affluent males, age 25-50.

So these are the two sets of logos that I’m going with. I like them both, but I have to pick one. I might go with the box one that feels contained and sturdy.

New blog, fresh start

Hopefully with the iPhone app for this site I can keep this blog updated more frequently than my last one. This blog will consist of a multitude of things. From interesting packaging or posters, to current projects and/or dilemmas I am having.

So this first post if more of a “Hello” and welcome to my insane blog. I will attempt to post everyday, but that most likely wont happen for awhile. for now I will post whenever i find that i have a topic/picture to post about.
